Innovative biotech firm raises $33 million to progress gene therapy treatment for refractory epilepsy

Refractory (meaning a condition that resists treatment) epilepsy is, sadly, a condition that blights the lives of so many of our loved ones. Thus news released by EpilepsyGTx, a biotechnology company focused on gene therapies to treat refractory epilepsy, caught the eye when it was distributed late last year.

Epilepsy GTx announced that it has raised $33 million in financing to advance its work through clinical trials.

Its gene therapy programme, EPY 201, will be tested in a broad population of patients with focal refractory epilepsy, to establish its effectiveness and safety.

If successful, the company believes that it offers people with focal refractory epilepsy “the prospect of seizure freedom in a single intervention without surgery and the chronic use of multiple antiseizure medicines.”

It’s a bold claim and ambition, but well worth us keeping an eye on the progress they make in the months and years ahead.
